Travelers through Sherman County’s 831 square miles of wheat and barley farms would do well to slow down and take time to enjoy the spectacular views, fly fishing, whitewater rafting, wind surfing, and water skiing on the Deschutes, Columbia, and John Day Rivers, all of which border Sherman County. Mt. Hood can be seen against the wide open sky in the distance.

The largest percentage of area under cultivation and a total lack of timber make this county unique in Oregon. In fact, agriculture and tourism are the only industries in Sherman County. The population has remained near 2000 since the county was created in 1889. Incorporated cities include Grass Valley, Rufus, Wasco, and Moro, which is the county seat.

Throughout the years many have passed through Sherman County on their way to somewhere else: the pioneers headed for the Willamette Valley, Lewis and Clark looking for the Pacific Ocean, native Americans on their way to Celilo Falls. Before you pass through, stop awhile for water sports on scenic rivers and a look at real rural American farmland in Sherman County, Oregon.
