Harney County, Oregon

Harney County, in the south east portion of Oregon, is a land of wild mustangs, a nearly 10,000 foot mountain, and a wild life refuge that is home to over 250 species of birds. At 10,226 square miles, it is the largest county in Oregon.

The opportunities for recreation in Harney County are many and varied. Snowmobiling, skiing and snowboarding as well as hunting for elk, deer, antelope, pheasants and grouse are only a few. Steens Mountain, south east of Burns, whose 9670 foot summit can be reached by automobile, presents hiking, rock climbing, and geology study experiences. Diamond Craters, north west of the town of Diamond, offers lava tubes, cinder cones, and pit craters, making up one of the most diverse volcanic areas in the continental U.S. The 183,000 acre Malheur National Wildlife Refuge situated around Malheur Lake, a stop on the Pacific flyway, is a dream come true for hikers, birders, and photographers. The Ochoco and Malheur National forests offer hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling and mushrooming with endless scenic opportunities. The Kiger mustangs, unique to Harney County, are named after Little Kiger Creek located at the bottom of Kiger Gorge on Steens Mountain where these wild horses can be seen roaming the hills and valleys.

The population center of the county is the Burns-Hines area in north central Harney County with approximately 5000 people, 7,600 total for the county. Agriculture and cattle ranching occupies a major portion of the economy along with wood products and motor coach component manufacturing.
