Gilliam County, Oregon

Located in the heart of the Columbia Basin Wheatlands, Gilliam County combines a rural agriculture centered life style with urban advantages. Condon, the county seat, is located just 28 miles from Interstate 84, The Dalles is just 69 miles away and the major metro area of Portland is only 150 miles. Air, rail, and marine shipping services are all easily accessible. The city of Condon maintains a municipal golf course, swimming pool, and historic museum. This small town provided a needed resting place for Oregon Trail travelers and is still ideally located today. Designated “enterprise zones” are available in the area for business development and commercially zoned lots in Condon are ready for business. High-speed wireless internet and phone lines are available in the wide open spaces of Gilliam County where the possibilities are endless.

Gilliam County is bordered on the north by the Columbia River and on the west by the John Day River. It contains 1,223 square miles with a population of nearly 2000. The county was named after Col. Cornelius Gilliam who died in the Cayuse War of 1847. Fishing, hunting, and foraging trails worn by the Indians can still be seen today in the rangelands of Gilliam County.

No smog, no noise or light pollution will spoil the quality of life in the rural communities of this county. No one knows for sure, maybe it’s the fresh air, rolling rangelands, or endless starry skies that contributed to the growing of two Nobel Laureates in Gilliam County, Linus Pauling and William Parry Murphy, who are honored every year in February along with reknown musician Doc Severinsen who is honored at the Big River Band Festival in Artlington, in June each year.
